It’s hard to believe that Bruce Wayne has been out of the picture for over a year now. It seems like only yesterday that I was trying to wrap my brain around the image of Superman holding his dead body before Morrison left bat fans everywhere with the image of a lone figure in the Stone Age carving a bat symbol into the wall of a cave. However as fun as prehistory is it was inevitable that sooner or later there would come a time when Bruce would return. That day is still a way off in the distance, but the cover of the latest Batman & Robin tells us that “The Return of Bruce Wayne Begins Here!” & what a hell of a start it’s off to...

Whenever I dip my toe into the world of superhero comics I have a tendency to be left somewhat confused. So many of the mainstream superhero comics are entrenched in continuity, which means when I leave big gaps between reading issues I have no idea what’s going on. This isn’t to take anything away from the stories or artists, if you’re reading them regularly they make sense, but for readers like myself jumping in can be daunting and overwhelming. Which is the reason I tend to steer away from the mainstream superhero comics in particular The Avengers.

Being a recent convert to Jonah Hex (after reading issue 50 and the trade Bullets Don't Die) I was intrigued to see Jeff "Sweet Tooth" Lemire tweet some Hex sketches.
Is Lemire going to work with Jimmy Palmiotti and Justin Gray on an issue of Jonah Hex? I hope so, he draws a gruff Hex and I’d like to see him draw an entire issue. For now though I’ll have to enjoy his sketches (and the other great warm up sketches he tweets out).

It seems increasingly clear that with the demise of the Punisher Max monthly series which followed on from Garth Ennis much loved series is maybe not quite as dead as previously reported. Although not seemingly an official monthly book now, Marvel’s Max comics seem to be treating us to an irregularly regular series of outstandingly good one shot looks at the legend of Frank Castle Last up was the all Brit effort Get Castle, now a couple of month on, we are presented with the staggering, violent and moving world of Butterfly.

If you listened to MOMBcast #24 (and if you haven't why not) you would have heard me talk about a small press title sent to us from creator Warwick Cadwell. I didn’t get a chance to read it before we recorded, but I have now and I’m pleased to say it’s a wonderful title brimming with creativity.

It's not often I struggle to find a comic I want, but in the case of Afrodisiac it's rarer than issue 1 of Action Comics. I searched everywhere for a it, Amazon, my local comic shop, countless online retailers, I even saw a copy sell for £70+ on ebay. My last resort was to order direct from the publishers AdHouse Books (in the US) until Xomneon tweeted me about a site called The Book Depository. A few clicks and a couple of days later I'm now the proud owner of this absurdly funny comic.

De la soul had it all wrong. We know that 3 is not the magic number at all. It is of course the number 1. Stuck on the front of a comic book it becomes a signal brighter than the bat signal, that draws me, like a geek inflicted moth to the comic book shop shelves, salivating at the prospect of some thing brand new and fresh to sink my brain into. This of course is only intensified if it’s a book written by one of my favourite geek genre icons. So needless to say the prospect of getting my hands on the first issue of Kevin Smith’s Dynamite published book The Green Hornet, made the trip to Forbidden Planet even more tantalising this week than on a normal Thursday. It’s almost like they knew it was my birthday…

Often shocking, always gripping and completely raw Scalped is a comic that at times can be difficult to digest. So when a standalone story comes along that writer Jason Aaron promises will “take a deep breath and cleanse the palate a bit”, you know we’re in for something special.

As you will know if you are unfortunate enough to have downloaded MOMBcast 23 this week, we included in that show the second of the Tintin primers preparing us (well me to be truthful) for the excitement of the big screen version of the Belgian boy reporter at the end of next year. The issues covered this week are arguably the most iconic of the series, although possibly mostly for the vehicle which sits prominently on the cover of both books of this double feature.

Rich Just three days after a Superman book became the first comic to sell for $1 million, a Batman comic book sold on Thursday at auction for about $75,000 more.
A rare copy of Detective Comics No. 27 from 1939 (where "The Batman" made his debut) has sold for a record-setting $1,075,500, the Heritage Auction Galleries in Dallas reports.
All this just three days after Action Comics Number #1 became the first comic to sell for $1 million.

Work With Him On A Special Non-Marvel Project!
The comic industry is notoriously difficult to break into, but today Mark Millar opened the door of opportunity. Over at his official website Millar started a forum thread looking for an unknown artist(s) to work with him on a yet to be named project.
Here’s what he said:

Ol’ man Bendis he just keeps rolling along. I like, in my more lonely moments, to picture the state Mr Bendis’ keyboard and PC must be in. Keys whittled down to stubs, smoking from over use his frazzled VDU in front of his fevered visage, wheezing for mercy at the unrelenting onslaught it must have been facing over the last few months. You can say what you like about this guy, but his output has been phenomenal. Dark Avengers is 14 now and the shits really starting to hit the fan as Normans little world is unravelling around his (not as pointy as they used to be) ears…

I reviewed the first instalment of this book last month, whilst telling you about the frothy state of excitement that the arrival of a new creator owned book by Grant Morrison, was plunging me into. Two issues down and I still feel that sense of excitement, and still feel that this is a book that both demands attention, and stays in the mind long after the final panel has been read. It’s also received a fair amount of critical praise too, but after two issues is it yet deserving of this, and more importantly, have we any better idea of where this
